(Interlude) A Challenge for Followers

Since I just posted Delve #09 last night, I have now finished the first three "sets" of delves.  Each of the original twelve has drawn a black bean . . . and now a new round begins . . .

And I'm asking all of you who read this blog to suggest where you think the new group of delvers should explore.  Here are images of what has been explored so far:

from the SOUTH

from the WEST

from the NORTH

from the EAST

Question marks in rooms indicate that while the room may or may not have been entered, it has not been explored or searched.  Question marks in or around corridors mean that they have not been explored or were beyond visible distance.

Yellow circled red letters indicate surface entrances.  Grey corridors indicate slopes or stairs.  Those with blue letters indicate those sloping down to a lower level.  Rose circles indicate known traps.  And, of course, brown slabs indicate doors.

The new delvers will be:
  • Norfaz -- 2nd lvl Fighter -- AC - 3;  HP - 22 -- War Hammer & Crossbow
  • Taggert -- 1st lvl Fighter --  AC - 4;  HP - 10 -- 2-Hand Sword
  • Ragnorf -- 2nd lvl Dwarf -- AC - 2;  HP - 20 -- Mace
  • Gylvair -- 1st lvl Elf -- AC - 4;  HP - 7 -- Longsword -- (Magic Missile & Sleep)

If they survive a delve both Taggert and Gylvair are likely to go up to second level since both are fairly close to doing so.

So where do you think that they should go?  (Please leave comment as to entrance and proposed path).

By the way, after the first nine delves:
  • Three are dead -- Olaf (delve 1), Conrad (delve 3),  Jangnar (delve 4)
  • Four made 2nd Level -- Norfaz, Fasboo, Dleps and Ragnorf
  • Five still at 1st Lvl -- Taggert, Lumissa, Sperl, Gylvair and Wyrdrom

Please let me know where you think Norfaz, Taggert, Ragnorf and Gylvair should go?  (Please leave comment as to entrance and proposed path).

  1. Oh, and there is an overall view of the various explored area posted on my Saxe-Bearstein blog:

  2. Enter via Surface area B and head to Y - I've got a good feeling about this one, I sense riches beyond their wildest dreams....or something that gnashes its teeth and has large pointy things that hurt.

  3. I wouldn't go down a level in the dungeons just yet myself. My choice would probably be to enter at A, try room 2, and then the T intersection.
(I don't remember the details about what was in any of the rooms in previous delves, or what may still be lurking in there.)

  4. Room 2 was described (in Delve 1) as . . . "a dark room filled with webs and wrapped-up bundles that made the party close the door and leave Room 2 unexplored".

    1. I almost voted for them to explore this room, since it sounds creepy, but it sounds a little too much like a giant spider encounter, which is not only bad for low level characters (too many poison saving throws), and I'm not a fan of giant spiders/rats/badgers/etc.

  5. From my rather limited DandD experiences, I prefer to extend the known areas, leaving unexplored corridors for another time. So far the most explored areas are the 1,10,11,12 complex (Ent A) and the 13,18,19,20 (Ent D). I'd go for one of those areas, whichever was familiar to most of the present group, and see whether there might be more of interest to be found there.

I've just gone back through the earlier 'delves', and it has to be said, they haven't been a cakewalk, exactly, have they?

    Cheers,
    Ion

  6. No, Ion, no cakewalk at all . . . not even close.

Read my comment on Delve 9 . . . I fully expected multiple fatalities with that final encounter . . . and I am amazed that they all survived.

  7. I'm with Ion on this one.
BTW how do I become a follower as there's no thingy at the side?

  8. I don't know. Becoming a follower used to be easy . . . but now that Google owns Blogger you have to be a member of G+ (or something like that) which wants to know lots of stuff about you and wants you to become a part of lots of stuff.

Anyway I gave up on it. As far as I'm concerned you become a Follower by leaving comments . . . and if I know your email (and I know yours from other things), I will occasionally send out a BCC notice when there is something of special interest.

There are some folks who comment but whose emails I do not know. If you want me to send such notices, please email me at . . . bluebearjeff at shaw dot ca . . . (note that is .ca NOT .com ) . . . the .ca is for Canada.

    * BCC stands for "Blind Carbon Copy" . . . so your email address does not appear to others.

    1. For tradgardmastare and anyone else interested in following, you can add any blog's url to your "reading list" on your blogger.com/home dashboard, assuming you have a blogger account. On the left side of the screen, under the heading "Reading List" is an 'add' button. Just paste the url in there and it will show up on your list, even though nothing appears on the actual blog to my knowledge. But anytime the blog is updated you will see it in your list. Hope this helps.

  9. The party didn't seem to examine the statue in the fountain in room 8, just collect the silvers lying around it. What if it's important?

  10. *grin* . . . a very astute observation, sir. Certainly one of the group (who wasn't there at the time) would have demanded further investigation . . . but it didn't happen.

PS, you might want to send me your email address, sir.

    1. The same thought crossed my mind when I read it. I am inferring from all this (just seeking clarification really) that this is a solo game? Perhaps decisions are based on a die roll.

Having seen the overall (?) map on the other blog I recommend Entrance D with room 20 as the starting point of the next adventure. The fountain at Rm 8 can wait another time.
      Cheers,

    2. Yes, the overall map is visible on my Saxe-Bearstein blog (that's my "home" blog):

      http://saxe-bearstein.blogspot.ca/2014/02/off-topic-my-solo-d-blog.html

And, yes, it is a solo dungeon. All of the Delvers have "secret motivations" (ala the d30 stuff). If needed I decide what course of action each character would choose, then roll a die for each and see which choice garnered the most votes . . . but most of the time I just think of what they'd choose.

Also, I would like to make it clear that even I do not know what is beyond unopened doors or question marked passages. When necessary I draw cards (in a modified version of John Yorio's system -- link in right hand column) and then roll some dice . . . and, when indicated draw a monster card and roll again.

Monster Cards -- I've made up a large number of "wandering monster" 3x5 cards. They have the critical information up top; then six rows for differing numbers and hit points . . . so if the book says 2d6 appear, I will have rolled for the number in each row and the hp of each one of those. Thus when a monster card is drawn, I will roll a d6 to see which row they've encountered. And as they go deeper, "easy" cards will be removed and "nastier" cards added.

The real key is that I have no idea what will happen next . . . which allows me to be an "explorer" too.

  11. First, I'm a big fan of finishing a level before starting down. That said, I'd enter at G and go through room 16 to either 17 or the corridor just to the east of 17. With five doors in that small area, it's sure to lead to fun and frivolity, without necessarily imperilling the delvers too too much. Hopefully. Maybe.
